June - Brazilian Crop and Exports

Overview

The harvest was finished about a month ago in Brazil, and the results were less than expected in the months building up to it, in both quality and productivity. The production is still believed to be abundant, but more due to the area planted than to high productivity.

Concerning the quality, the most frequent issues are with aflatoxin, hindering the farmers sales to possible shellers. And resulting in a big question mark to what the real production of grade 1 quality, grade 2, grade 3 or grade 4 is and, therefore, how much should each of these be priced at, after all, they all have different demands and value.

While those levels and estimations fluctuate, the farmers that can store their volumes seem to have done it, hoping that prices will go up at some point, while farmers that could not store, or could, but had to sell to pay their bills, have had to go lower to sell.

Nevertheless, the farmer’s hopes, are only backed China, that is showing some good appetite for kernels and oil. While Europe is taking its time, watching as Argentina carries on with their harvest. Russia seems to be well covered. And other importers are not making many movements.

Exports

During April and May, Brazil exported about 23 thousand tons of peanuts, each month, and about 17 thousand tons of oil, each month as well, welcome increases in face of the production Brazil had.

This numbers of oil exports were back-to-back records to Brazil and are something to be looked at very closely. As I have mentioned in previous reports, if anyone had potential to change the situation in Brazil, was the demand from China.

Peanuts

During April and May, Brazil exported 23 thousand tons, much closer to normal volumes than the same period last year, where growers and shellers faced a tough scenario and could not agree on prices.

This fast increase in volume is very important now for the whole sector as the exceeding offer can really hinder the functioning of the market.

Destination

China added itself to the main destinations since they imported, in April, about 4 thousand tons of peanut kernels, another sign of the potential of volume the Chinese can move. Although, in May, the exports to that destination decreased to about 1 thousand tons, I believe we may see that number increase again in the next months.

Exports to Russia and Algeria have been increasing steadily since February. While exports to the European Union decreased slightly from April to May. Results of the slow demand.

Peanut oil

Brazil exported about 17 thousand tons of peanut oil monthly in April and May. In the past years, the highest volume Brazil had exported was 15,3 thousand tons, in September 2022.

Considering that about 40% of crushing results in oil, this means about 42 thousand tons of peanuts crushed in each of the past two months. Similarly to the kernel’s exports, this considerable volume will also be extremely important in the final balance of the crop and in adjusting the offer and demand balance.

From the destination perspective, it is not hard to see that China is the responsible for the rapid increase in peanut oil exports in the last three months.
